When you're named one of America's "playful cities," there's only one way to celebrate: Play!
Rock Hill is among 118 municipalities deemed a Playful City USA for providing quality places spaces. Spartanburg is the only other South Carolina city on the list. Rock Hill officials received the award from KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit that pushes for "a place to play within walking distance of every child in America." Playful City USA is a national recognition program honoring cities and towns across the nation committed to taking action for play.
The Rock Hill Parks, Recreation & Tourism department received the Agency of the Year Award Class IV (cities with a population over 50,000) for accomplishments in the past fiscal year including making great strides in facilities and tourism opportunities, offering new programs, and collaborating with partners and volunteers while meeting the demands of an economic downturn. This was awarded by the state, and the award specifically mentions Manchester Meadows, Rock Hill's new soccer complex. Rock Hill was also awarded a spot in the 100 Best Communities for Young People by Americas Promise Alliance. This was the third time that the city has been recognized for this award. According to an article on the website, Rock Hill "boasts a thriving community where arts, culture, sports, parks, special events and educational opportunities abound. Partnerships have been forged among city government, school district, arts council, museum system, local businesses and the faith community to ensure Rock Hill provides superior facilities, services and support to the young people of the community."
Last but definitely not least, Rock Hill was named the Best Place to Raise your Kids 2010 by Bloomberg. The report names one city per state, and we were South Carolina's honored city. We are cited for some of the "best public schools" and our proximity to Charlotte.
What a great place to call home! We have so much to offer, and it's nice to see the city get some recognition for it. The community continues to improve, with beautiful additions like our new Riverwalk, and the future development of that area. Click on the links below if you'd like to read more about these awards.
